Musical universes: it is time to act

In this Opening Conference of the XVIII National Meeting of APEM, “Music in Education: The art of selecting repertoire”, presented on-line on October 23, 2024, the diversity and richness of artistic and educational intervention currently existing in Portugal was highlighted. Examples of schools specialized in different genres of music such as classical music, jazz, traditional music, pop or rock were given, different types of music ensembles, such as orchestras, philharmonic bands, choirs, “tunas” and combos, among others, programs and initiatives from public and private entities and emblematic examples of cultural institutions with consolidated educational projects. Above the fundamental role of repertoires in learning, the importance of the quality of teaching and the involvement of children and young people in musical practices of different genres, as well as knowing/singing/playing music from other cultures, not only to develop abilities and acquire new skills but as an effective way of getting to know/appreciate/respect “others”. The focus is on musical, cultural and social development, but also on building paths for the brotherhood of peoples.
