About the Journal
History, scope, and objectives
Founded in 1972 under the title Boletim Informativo da Associação Portuguesa de Educação Musical (APEM) and later Boletim da APEM (from issue no. 1 to no. 28 and from no. 29 to no. 102, respectively), this journal was published quarterly from its foundation until 1999. Later that year, with the publication of no. 103 in October/December, the title changed to Educação Musical - Revista, and it became known as the Revista de Educação Musical da APEM. Starting in 2002, the journal was published annually (ISSN: 1646-6306). It was in 2016 that the journal adopted its current name - Revista Portuguesa de Educação Musical. Published by the Portuguese Association of Music Education (APEM), the journal has always aimed to be a national reference in the field, featuring a diverse range of contributions from both national and international authors.
Since its inception, the publication's mission has been to serve as a vehicle for training, information, dialogue, and reflection for all those involved and interested in the fields of Music and Education. Thus, its target audience includes students, professionals, researchers, and academics in the field of music education and its intersection with other areas, working across various educational contexts – from formal general and specialised education to informal and non-formal teaching and learning environments - covering all age groups and levels of education. In 2016, the APEM board decided to reformulate and update the publication of its journal in various aspects, in response to the development and expansion of previous editions as well as the advancement in academic studies and research in Portugal in the field of music. The journal publishes scientific articles of a theoretical or empirical nature, reflections on best practice and book reviews. Since 2016, it has adopted a policy of blind peer review for scientific articles.
Taking on the new designation of Revista Portuguesa de Educação Musical, this publication aims to continue being a distinctive landmark on our country's music and education scene. Its objectives are: (1) To promote training, information, dialogue and reflection among all those who work in or are interested in the various fields of Music Education; (2) To stimulate the production and dissemination of scientific and pedagogical knowledge in the area of Music Education and its intersection with other fields; (3) To encourage the sharing of innovative and meaningful practices in the specific contexts of music education; (4) To ensure the scientific quality of published articles through a blind peer review process aligned with international standards; (5) To make the published content available in open access, promoting the democratisation of knowledge and its wide dissemination.
